Herb House - Starpack Bronze Award Winner

Brief

Create a carton board kit that contains everything you need to grow culinary herbs in your home.

Concept

Herb House is a new ‘grow your own’ herb kit designed for families who want to grow and use fresh herbs in their cooking. It contains four starter herb seeds: parsley, basil, mint and coriander. These herbs were chosen because of their versatility - they can be used across a range of cuisines and  some can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes. Alongside the instructions for growing, there are two recipe ideas designed to encourage both adults and children to get involved in cooking and using the herbs they have grown.
The pack is proposed to be made with biodegradable materials so that the base can be planted in the garden if the consumer wished. Otherwise, they could keep it on a windowsill which attracts plenty of daylight.

Hand Cut Illustrations

The herb illustrations on the lid include each herb seed in the pack. They represent all of the herbs growing up inside of the greenhouse and can be seen from the ‘windows’ cut from the green card. They were originally drawn by hand, then scanned and traced on Illustrator. They were then printed and cut out by hand to maintain a natural flow of the lines. As this was quite time consuming, it is proposed to be die cut if many were reproduced.  A version with acetate windows was considered, but as there would be no product initially until the plants were grown, windows were deemed unnecessary.
